Humane Puerto Rico

In partnership with the Humane World for Animals
(formerly Humane Society of the United States & Humane Society International)

H/3 participated in a sweeping Puerto Rico humane-education program that equipped teachers to bring ethics and empathy toward animals into their classrooms, reaching the children who are the long-term solution to the island’s persistent animal welfare challenges.

In 2015, Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International) partnered with the Government of Puerto Rico to launch Humane Puerto Rico.  The program aimed to address persistent animal-related issues in Puerto Rico and redefined the community’s relationships with animals.

H/3 funded the program section supporting teachers incorporating humane education into their curricula.  This approach focused on children as the solution to animal-related problems, teaching ethics and empathy toward animals and people.

The H/3 humane education materials reached over 400,000 students in Puerto Rico.  To add humane education in a fun and engaging way, students were provided with colorful materials including the HSUS magazine Kind News.

The Humane Puerto Rico program also trained approximately 3,000 law enforcement officers in animal cruelty investigations, offered social media training to shelter/rescue workers, and provided computer equipment and software to shelters, together with training for shelter staff in all of these new resources.
