Birds of a Feather

Produced by Robert Kenner

A short film about a ground-breaking program at Serenity Park Sanctuary that pairs combat veterans with rescued parrots, and the unexpected healing that happens when two trauma survivors recognize each other.

A combat veteran and a rescued parrot at Serenity Park Sanctuary

Inspired by the book Birds of a Feather by Dr. Lorin Lindner, this short film documents the program at Serenity Park Sanctuary that pairs abandoned, abused, neglected and relinquished parrots with combat veterans.  The shared experience of trauma allows the two groups to recognize and understand each other – and through that understanding, healing begins.

Founded by Dr. Lindner in 2005 on the grounds of the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center, Serenity Park has become a model for animal-assisted recovery from PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other complex trauma.  The veterans care for the birds.  The birds, in turn, give the veterans a reason to wake up.

Produced in association with H/3 Foundation and Robert Kenner, the Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning director of Food, Inc., Birds of a Feather is a quiet, intimate film about the profound connection that forms when wounded beings choose to heal each other.

The shared experiences of trauma allow these two groups to understand each other, and it is through this understanding that healing is able to take place.
